ANZSIL was established in 1992 with the aims of
- developing and promoting the discipline of international law
- supporting the teaching of international law
- providing
a forum for academics, government lawyers, NGOs, students and
practitioners of international law to discuss research and issues of
practice in international law
- increasing public awareness and understanding of international law
- liaising with other bodies in promoting any of these objects
ANZSIL pursues these aims through a number of activities, including its regular publications (
ANZSIL Perspectives and the
ANZSIL Newsletter), the annual conference, its support for students, and ANZSIL Interest Groups.
Membership
of ANZSIL is open to all those with an interest in the field of
international law, including legal practitioners, academics, government
officials, civil society organisations, and students of international
law. You can
join online. You can also find more information about
the governance and organisation of
ANZSIL, including the ANZSIL Constitution and the current members of the
ANZSIL Council.
ANZSIL’s Interest Groups provide a forum for in-depth discussion and the
exchange of ideas amongst those with a particular interest in specific
areas of international law.
More
information about how to get involved in the work and activities of the
Interest Groups, and upcoming events, can be found on the pages of the respective
Interest Groups.
ANZSIL is actively involved in a wide range of other international law activities, and organises numerous events. ANZSIL provides financial support for Australian and New Zealand international law students through the Internship Support
program, and by supporting the winning Australian and New Zealand teams
to travel to the finals of the Philip C Jessup International Law Moot
Competition in Washington, DC each year.
The quarterly ANZSIL Newsletter
provides an update on recent practice in international law in Australia
and New Zealand, as well as the activities of the Society and other
international events within and outside the region. ANZSIL also has a
monthly series, ANZSIL Perspectives, consisting of short notes on international law matters.
ANZSIL is hosted by The Australian National University's Centre for International and Public Law and the Victorian University of Wellington's New Zealand Centre for Public Law.
