Conference Program

We look forward to welcoming participants to the 31st ANZSIL Annual Conference on the theme of International Law: Crisis, Conflict and Cooperation.

The Conference will begin on Wednesday 3 July 2024 at 9AM with a welcome (registration will be open from 8.30AM) and will conclude on Friday 5 July 2024 at 1PM.

The Conference Program (1 July) and Biographies and Abstracts (1 July) are now available. 

Speakers and chairs should note that unless otherwise stated on the program, the duration of each panel is 90 minutes.  On panels with four papers, each speaker will have 15 minutes to present. On panels with three papers, each speaker will have 20 minutes to present.  This will enable time for questions and discussion at the end of each panel.

Due to the large amount of interest in the 2024 Conference we have closed registrations.  We apologise if you were not able to register this year, but we look forward to seeing you at the ANZSIL Conference in 2025.

ANZSIL International Law Teaching Workshop

ANZSIL and the La Trobe International and Comparative Law Research Group will be hosting an International Law Teaching Workshop on Tuesday 2 July 2024 from 2.30PM to 4.30PM. The theme for the workshop is ‘Teaching International Law in Times of Crisis’. The registration fee for the workshop is AUD20.00.  Further information about the Teaching Workshop for Panellists and Participants is available here.

Registration for Conference, Dinner and Teaching Workshop

Please use the registration link at the bottom of the menu on the left and follow the prompts to register securely online. Amounts are given in Australian dollars (AUD). You will only be able to submit one registration option at a time (unless registering for guests under the same option). Please remember to enter any dietary requirements for the conference on registration.

When you click on each registration option you will be able to register for the conference dinner for an additional AUD100.00 and the Teaching Workshop for an additional AUD20.00 (the Teaching Workshop is not available for Complimentary Registration).  Further information about the dinner is provided below.

Note for conference speakers: Your place in the program will not be confirmed until you have registered for the conference.  We ask you to register or contact us as soon as possible so that we can finalise the program.

Conference Venue

This year’s conference will be held in-person only at Melbourne Law School, 185 Pelham Street, Carlton, Victoria, 3053.  A campus map highlighting the Law School building (Building 106) is available here

Melbourne Law School is well serviced by public transport, including trams on Elizabeth Street/Royal Parade and Swanston Street.  Note that the city free tram zone ends before the tram stops nearest the Law School on both Elizabeth Street and Swanston Street.  Payment for public transport in Melbourne is through a myki card.  Information about purchasing and topping up a myki card can be found here.

Many of the accommodation options listed in the attachments below are within walking distance of Melbourne Law School.

Coffee will not be provided on registration, but there is no shortage of cafes close to the University of Melbourne!  A list of options is available here.

COVID advice

The University of Melbourne’s COVID advice is as follows: Please do not come to campus if you are unwell with any of the following symptoms, however mild: fever, chills or sweats, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, runny nose, loss or change in sense of taste or smell – even if you have a negative rapid antigen test result. Follow Victorian Department of Health advice regarding testing and when to seek medical advice.

Conference Dinner

The conference dinner will take place at 7PM on Thursday 4 July 2024 at The Residence, Grand Hyatt, 123 Collins St, Melbourne, 3000.  The cost of the dinner is AUD100.00.  You can register for the conference dinner when you click on the various registration options on the menu to the left. Please remember to enter any dietary requirements.  

The conference dinner will feature the presentation of the 2024 ANZSIL publication prizes and the ever popular ANZSIL international law trivia quiz!  We look forward to seeing you there.

Accommodation

There are several accommodation options available close to the University of Melbourne.  There are also many hotels in the city that are a short tram ride to Melbourne Law School. 

We have agreed special accommodation rates with several providers.  Please see the information here and here for further information, including information about the distance to the Law School.

Travel Information

Participants and delegates are responsible for ensuring that they comply with visa and any other requirements for entering Australia.  ANZSIL is not able to provide advice to delegates about visas. Information on visas for entering Australia is available on the Department of Home Affairs website.

Registration Cancellation and Refund Policy

A registrant must provide the registration confirmation details (including the email address used to pay via PayPal) when submitting a written cancellation request to anzsil@anu.edu.au

Cancellation requests cannot be taken over the telephone.  Cancellation requests will not be processed after Tuesday 25 June 2024
unless there are extenuating circumstances. Evidence needs to be provided in order for a full cancellation after this date.

Conference no-shows are ineligible for a refund.
